AACSB accreditation and HBS Assurance of Learning (AoL)

AACSB is an international accreditation for business and management schools with a view to foster engagement, accelerate innovation, and amplify impact in business education by continuously improving engagement among business, faculty, institutions, and students, so that business education is aligned with business practice. It is a mission, vision and values-based accreditation, which helps schools of business and management establish their own identity and compete on a global marketplace.

Success in our AACSB accreditation will see the Hertfordshire Business School join an elite group of global business schools who hold the triple-accreditation of AMBA, EPAS and AACSB. This mark of quality will underline our reputation as a business school of choice and underpin our commitment to student transformation. In order to achieve a mark of excellence, HBS will aim to align its operations with AACSB standards and HBS Assurance of Learning (AoL) is one of these standards.

Assurance of Learning (AoL) is an important part of AACSB accreditation. It is a process (and a part of AACSB standards), which refers to demonstrating, through assessment processes, that students achieve learning expectations for the programs in which they participate. This standard operates on a programme level and ensures that all students achieve specific competencies (transferable, practical and professional skills) set by the school.

We have approached Assurance of Learning – or AOL – with our Vision and Mission as a School paramount in our minds.

  • Vision – Empowering students through transformational education and research.
  • Mission – Transforming students as learners and professionals, enabling them to play their part in the global economy by challenging and innovating business thinking.

If we consider the transformation of our students to be the guiding principle that we all work to then, eventually, we will ask ourselves how do we manage this transformation? How do we know that our students have been transformed, and how do we measure this transformation? HBS Assurance of Learning (AoL) supplies us with a mechanism to ensure, record and measure student transformation.
